Welcome to Edinburgh University Windsurfing and Surfing Club on the web. EUWSC is a club dedicated to the sports of windsurfing and surfing. We are an active club with people surfing or windsurfing whenever there are waves or wind. We are a very social club and are often to be found in the pub when we're not at the beach.
During term time we run trips to the beach every weekend. We usually take a minibus and tow all of the kit we need on our fantastic trailer. We normally do one surf trip and one windsurf trip each week on Wednesdays and Saturdays depending on the conditions. These trips are all organised in Revolution on Wednesday from 1:30pm - 2pm when we have our meeting. We have annual big trips to Tiree and Firbush for windsurfing and Thurso and Newquay for surfing. At the end of autumn term we go to Machrihanish on the Mull of Kintyre for both windsurfing and surfing.
There is a weekly meeting at Revolution on Wednesday from 1:30pm - 2pm. Social gatherings usually take place at Revolution on Thursday from 9pm where everyone in the club gets together for a some drinks and normally go out afterwards. Click here for a map and directions on how to get there. If you have never windsurfed before then we will teach you. We have loads of qualified instructors in the club, wetsuits, boards, sails, in fact everything you need. We do our teaching at the lagoon in Musselburgh (about 30 minutes from the kit store). This is a very safe and pleasant place to learn to windsurf.
If you're a bit more advanced then we also run trips to some of the great beaches around Edinburgh. We have shorter longboards and longer shortboards if you are ready to move down to the thrills and spills of shortboarding. For the more advanced yet there are always people going to the beach when it's windy. There is good blasting / bump and jump action to be had at beaches like Gullane and Longniddry, while there is also some wavesailing to be had at St Andrews, Dunbar and a few other less well know beaches around Edinburgh. If you do not have kit then we have some surprisingly decent kit including a Tiga bump and jump 269 and 263. We also have a fine collection of modern sails including NeilPryde Combat Wave, some Gastra Flow 1XS and some Ezzy sails. If you have your own kit then we have a place where you can store it, and save cluttering up your flat/Pollock room/bin. Beginners' trips tend to be organised at the weekly meeting with more advanced trips generally being done in cars and organised more on the fly when it's windy. We do a lot of surfing, in fact we recently won the local team competition sponsored by Boardwise. We also came second in the Northern British Universities championships, and put in a good showing at the British Universities Championships in Newquay.
Whenever there are waves there will be people heading to the sea. During term time there are some dawn raids to be had before lectures, and afternoons off (or even on but we can't condone that!) are often spend surfing away stress/hangovers/dodgy guts after that kebab last night.
We go away to lots of places throughout the year. These trips are always cheap and very cheerful. There is a EUWSC trip for everyone, from the excellent weekends at the university outdoor centre for beginners (and anyone else wanting to come along), to the trips to Tiree and Thurso during the Easter holidays.
Basically we'll do anything. Some members sometimes run a bit of a snowboarding trip to France at Christmas, we have been known to surf sofas down the sand dunes on Tiree. So.. that's what we get up to and now you know! |
